As a company, there’s nothing like sending an email to your list that people open and pay attention to, instead of ignoring.
And as a person, there’s nothing worse than being drowned in boring, salesy, spammy emails.
For this project, my goal was to achieve the former and avoid the latter. So instead of focusing on what the people could do for the company, I used copy that focused on what the company could do for the people.
In this case, the company—Apex Generation Leadership, which offers professional coaching for young adults—wanted to reconnect with their mailing list by sharing some updates and details about their new coaching model.
I wrote these emails to be able to drop into MailChimp, adding buttons and personalized name fields where appropriate.

Email #1: Find Out How Our New Coaching Model Saves You Money
Hi [Name],
Ever noticed how life gets crazy sometimes? You feel like you’re running on a treadmill and someone keeps upping the speed until your legs are a blur, your lungs are burning, and you’re on the verge of flying right off?
We know how it feels. In fact, we’ve been there. Over the past several months, StudentHero has undergone some big changes, because we want to hold to our mission more effectively: providing affordable coaching for you.
We wanted to take a minute to share some updates with you and let you know where our business is headed and how you can benefit.
1. First, we have a new name! StudentHero is now officially Apex Generation Leadership (AGL).
2. Second, we have a new coaching model! Here’s a quick rundown of how it works:
- Apply for one of our two coaching programs (more info on those later).
- Get accepted for the program.
- Sponsor yourself (pay for the coaching) or find someone to sponsor you.

3. Coming soon…we help you find sponsors. We do the legwork. You still get the results. This feature is in progress, but here’s a peek at the process:
- AGL connects with companies who want to sponsor our pool of approved applicants.
- Companies choose students to sponsor.
- You receive coaching in exchange for organic marketing.
What does that mean? Instead of forking over hundreds of dollars, all you need to do is apply and be approved, receive a sponsorship, and then promote your sponsor company on social media. You won’t spend a dime. Cue more money to help pay your bills, keep food in the fridge, and save up for your dream house.
